Brief History
Named after William Huskisson, a British member of parliament, Huskisson was settled in 1840 at the mouth of the Jervis Bay River, now known as Currambene Creek.
At the time, the area was used for cattle grazing until the mid 1860's, when George Dent gathered sawyers, timber getters and ship wrights to create the first shipbuilding team in the area. Others followed suit and by the turn of the century, shipbuilding had become a major industry for Huskisson. One boat made locally in 1912 was the Lady Denman ferry. She operated in Sydney Harbour as a passenger ferry until she was towed back to Huskisson in 1981. Today the Lady Denman Ferry has become a permanent feature at the Lady Denman Maritime Museum.
